The Most Famous of all Lake Como Photo Locations: Villa del Balbianello (Lenno)

Villa del Balbianello is easily the most famous Lake Como photo location. It is first in mind for weddings, surprise proposals and elopements. If you want to schedule a photoshoot at Villa del Balbianello, you have to be early. They open reservations for photo permits on a rolling 90 day window — and you need to be fast. Slots are swiped as soon as they become available, year round.

Average cost of location:

Public entry is €20–€30 per person but professional photography permits go from €400 – €1,200. Private events in the Loggia Durini can cost you from €7k per hour.

Best for:

Hollywood level drama, elevated terrace overlooking the lake, gardens with vintage statues, iconic staircases and hidden gardens by the water.

Pro tips:

Avoid photo sessions during midday; only schedule surprise proposals during the private 6pm slots

Lake Como Photo Locations: Varenna

Varenna is a small, historic fishing village on the north western area of the lake. It is one of my personal favorite places for photos. You can walk the entire village, sharing a gelato, sipping an espresso, or popping and and out of the cute shops together. This location is free to wander around, making it perfect for engagement and proposal sessions.

Does this location require photography permits:

No permits required, but make sure to spend some money in the local businesses.

Best for:

Day trip from Milan, free access, colorful architecture, cobblestone streets, multiple public villas, candid “walking through an Italian market” feel.

Local tip:

Sunrise will get you the quietest moments, but sunset has the prettiest light. Make sure to stop for some gelato or an espresso.

Villa Monastero (Varenna)

Villa Monastero is perhaps the second most famous of all Lake Como photo locations. The villa is stunning from the water, and the decorative tiles under its iconic arched pavilion are unique on the lake. The gardens sprawl far to the sides of the villa itself, and are especially colorful in spring. It is an extremely busy public villa, however, so be prepared for a chaotic experience getting photos here.

Botanical gardens with lake backdrop; lakeside pathways; decorative stone columns and rails

Local tip:

Hotel Villa Cipressi (Varenna)

Personally, Hotel Villa Cipressi is perhaps my favorite underrated location on all of Lake Como for intimate weddings and elopements. The gardens alone warrant a visit, and the gate on the water makes for some of the most heavenly shots. The proximity to Varenna is perfect for those wanting to sneak away and cuddle up on the cobble stoned streets, sharing a piccolo or two espressi. It’s the perfect mix of villa, garden access and charming village to explore.

€250–€600 depending on shoot size.

Best views for:

Terraced gardens, lake panoramas, lemon gardens, the iconic “gate”

Local tip:

Sunset light hits the terraces beautifully, and the gate by the water is iconic; walk into nearby Varenna for a gelato and cozy streets

Lake Como Photo Locations: Bellagio

Like Varenna, Bellagio is a small village. It is therefore a “free” Lake Como photo location, but comes at another price: crowds. Bellagio is far too busy outside of sunrise hours, so I recommend exploring very early. From 8am until long in the evening, the streets are far too busy for clear shots. Nowadays, the village feels more like an Italian movie set trope, due to the shoulder to shoulder tourism all day long. You will hear more Americans here than Italians.

No permits required, but make sure to spend some money in the local businesses.

Best views for:

Colorful architecture, cobblestone streets, “walking through a market” feel.

Local tip:

Explore early; grab a coffee together and sit by the water at La Punta Spartivento as the day crowds wander in.

Hotel Villa Serbelloni Gardens (Bellagio)

Hotel Villa Serbelloni is a massive estate in the center of Bellagio. It’s sprawling grounds reach the water. There are gardens, a pool, and multiple restaurants and bars. Its proximity to Bellagio makes it an ideal location for getting up early and exploring the streets before the crowds filter in.

Does this location require photography permits:

It’s best to book a reservation at one of their fine dining restaurants, or as a hotel guest. You will therefore have access to the grounds. Make sure to discuss with management your plans to bring in a photographer.

€800-1,000k per night

Best views for:

Panoramic lake vistas, formal garden pathways, Bellagio town view.

Local tip:

For proposals, pop the question in one their manicured gardens, then sit down to a romantic water-side dinner at their Restaurant La Goletta or Mistral.

Villa Melzi (Bellagio)

Villa Melzi is a wonderful Lake Como photo location for those who want more minimalist views. The villa grounds are unique as they are open, grassy and provide wide views of the lake.

A sister of Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Hotel Villa Passalacqua is boutique perfection. It is simply one of the most stunning hotels on the lake, with meticulously curated grounds, interior decoration and bespoke accommodation. It comes at a premium, however, and is perhaps the most expensive place to stay. Rooms start at €2,500 and go up to €12,000 per night.

Villa Carlotta is only a few steps away, making it very convenient for adding villa photos into your session.
