From East Tirol to West Tirol: Ehrwald, Stubai, Innsbruck, Hintertux, Hohe Tauern National Park
If you’re taking a trip to the Alps and wanting to know the best places to elope in Austria while you’re here, welcome! I’m going to share with you my favorite places in Tirol to explore on your elopement day. Whether you’re looking for a destination wedding, an adventure elopement or just a honeymoon shoot, you will find what you’re looking for in one (or all) of these 5 areas.
In no particular order, these are the top 5 places to elope in Austria!
The Ehrwald area is essentially the Austrian side of the Garmish-Partenkirchen (Germany) region. The heart of this area is the towering Zugspitze mountain and surrounding lakes, which can be hiked in the summer and skied in the winter.
Year round, you can go up the Zugspitze and tour the glacier. It’s the perfect spot to combine lush green forests, bright blue-green lakes and snowy mountain peaks.
The gondolas make this area super convenient for those who don’t want to hike. For those who do, there are a number of absolutely incredible lakes concentrated in this area.

Stubaital is a beloved ski area for locals and tourists alike. In the winter, the expansive glacier and ski pistas offer miles of terrain to explore. Summer opens up just as much hiking and some of the best views in Tirol.
What’s more, it’s just a 45 minute drive from Innsbruck, where you can base your stay. Innsbruck is the heart of Tirol, and a charming Austrian city worthy of exploring in it’s own right.
Innsbruck (where I’m based) is truly the greatest city in the Alps. I’m biased, but hey, I chose to live here because I think it’s that great! Dubbed “the heart of the Alps” and charmingly “where mountain meets city,” it’s an ideal place to stay during your trip.
It has one of the world’s most modern climbing gyms, ski and mountain bike trails “above” the city, and a modern gondola that sweeps you directly from the charming old town straight to the mountain summit. In winter, it’s got one of the cutest Christmas markets in the area and a host of ski events. In summer, it’s lively and colorful, with events like Crankworx and the IFSC World Climbing Cup staging global events here.
If adventure isn’t as much your thing, the city is full of restaurants, museums and shopping as well.

Like the Stubai Valley, Hintertux is another glacial region that offers year round mountain adventures. It’s packed with hiking trails, climbing crags, mountain bike paths and gondola systems. You can go all the way to the end of the valley to the Stausee and hike to one of Austria’s most famous instagram locations: the panorama bridge.
This national park rests in the shadow of Austria’s highest peak: the Großglockner summit. It’s a lush, green area with waterfalls, melting glaciers and truly Austria’s best.
If you want to immerse yourself deep in Austria a bit further from typical tourist locations, like Imst, Innsbruck or Isgl, heading southeast to this area is a great opportunity.
