The Best Slovenia Elopement Locations

Why Slovenia is the Best Elopement Location You’ve Never Heard Of

Have you been searching for an alpine elopement location that combines the best views, vibes and value? Look no further than Slovenia. As someone local to the European Alps, Slovenia is my favorite hidden gem for adventure elopements. It has the lush green meadows of Switzerland and Austria, white, rocky peaks similar to the Dolomites, and deep turquoise river canyons unlike anywhere else. On top of these world class landscapes, are fewer crowds and budget constraints. Slovenia is far less busy than the Dolomites, and a fraction of the cost of the Swiss Alps. Additionally, its proximity to Italy means the food and wine is much better, and the people far more laid back.

So let me share with you my favorite locations within the Slovenian Alps, otherwise known as the Julian Alps.

Triglav National Park & Lake Bohinj: overall best mountain views

A lesbian couple stands reading their elopement vows in Triglav National park, with soft grasses in the foreground and tall mountains and the Soča River in the distance.

Triglav National Park is the best of the best when it comes to Slovenia elopement locations. The area is quite large, and perfect for vast mountain ceremony backdrops. There are multiple mountain passes which provide you access to high elevation lookouts and hiking trails without the need to hike all day.

However, if you do want a true hiking elopement in Slovenia, Triglav is still the place. You can start short or long hikes at lower elevations, like the Seven Lakes Valley (Dolina Sedmerih jezer) or from higher elevation parking, like Vršič pass. There are fully serviced mountain huts, making overnight trekking elopements comfortable and fun.

Where to stay: near lake Bohinj at Alpik Chalets. Year round, the chalets offer lots of space nestled in nature, the perfect setting for getting ready and relaxing at both ends of your elopement day.

Mount Kanin & Bovec: best little mountain village in Slovenia

Bovec is my personal favorite Slovenia elopement location. It’s a small village nestled near the Soča River, and a meeting point for all sorts of outdoor enthusiasts. You’ll see everyone from fly fishers and kayakers, to climbers, cyclists and paragliders.

The town itself is tucked right in a steep valley, meaning there are elopement worthy views within walking distance of your hotel. A short drive will bring you to the base of thundering waterfalls, high passes for hiking and riverside swimming holes. Therefore, if there is a type of mountain sport or activity you want to try, there is a guide in Bovec here who can take you (and I personally know quite a few).

Where to stay: Hotel Dobra Villa Bovec is a beautiful boutique hotel perfect for an elopement! The decor is quirky and art deco inspired, and you’re walking distance from shops and restaurants.

Soča Valley & Soča River: best for being near the water

If you know you want to be near water, the Soča River is the perfect location to exchange your vows. There are truly few other places in the European Alps that offer crystal clear pools of turquoise water over pure white stone like this.

The shades of blue and green are other worldly, and it’s one of the best places for whitewater rafting and kayaking in Europe. You can hire a rafting guide, or simply lounge on the rocky shores, enjoying the sun and a picnic.

Where to stay: luxury cabins like Pristava Lepena offer plenty of amenities for eloping couples, including meals, saunas, fire pits and lots of green space.

Lake Bled: best location for intimate wedding or destination weddings in Slovenia

A lesbian couple and their two children sit on a private dock overlooking Lake Bled in Slovenia the morning of their intimate elopement

The most famous Slovenia elopement location is definitely Lake Bled. It’s surrounded by lush hills and a vibrant city. The water is a deep blue green, with a beautiful atmosphere, rain or shine.

The historic Bled Castle watches over the lake, and is a popular place for wedding ceremonies and photos. It’s tradition for couples to row out to island and ring the bell in the church tower! The castle offers two wedding packages:

  • an intimate wedding package for up to ten people
  • classic wedding package for up to 100 guests

So if you’re group size is on the elopement or intimate wedding side, this is the perfect Slovenia elopement location.

Where to stay: luxury cabin on the lake with private water access and views of Blejski Otok (the island and church in the center).
