A couple stand looking over a dramatic mountain landscape surrounded by yellow and white wildflowers during their summer elopement in Slovenia

I’m about to convince you to plan your mountain elopement in Slovenia. Are you ready?

If you’re still searching for an elopement location in the Alps, and are turned off by the crowds in the Dolomites and the eye watering prices in the Swiss Alps, then Slovenia is for you.

Slovenia (not to be confused with Slovakia) is a small mountainous country bordering Italy and Austria to the east. It shares the most luscious portions of the European Alps with its better known neighbors — with far fewer crowds. The area where Austria, Slovenia and Italy meet is a region rich with waterfalls, bright blue canyons, towering white summits and and a mish-mash of Italian, German and Slovenian culture.

Here is what a summer elopement in Slovenia looks like, specifically, in Triglav National Park.

Summer elopement in Slovenia – quaint cabins, wildflowers and a first look

This couple’s elopement in Slovenia focused on a fun, casual and loosely structured day exploring the landscape. They wanted lots of greenery, emerald lakes, tall summits, and especially wildflowers. The last week of June and first two weeks of July are best for wildflowers, so keep that in mind when planning your own elopement in Slovenia.

The day started with a first look outside their chalet. The morning was warm and sunny, with butterflies and honeybees busy around us. From there, we packed up the car with plenty of picnic items and headed to a nearby lake to enjoy the charcuterie spread by the water.

When we arrived at the lake near noon, the sun was very strong. We opted to stay in the woods for the picnic, sitting just along the water in the shade. The day before, A&D drove up from Venice, through Udine. There, they found a small shop which had a great selection of meats, cheeses, jams and crackers. These two LOVE a curated charcuterie board, and liked the idea starting their day this way. With a bottle of champagne, bowl of fruit and their meat and cheese board, they sat and enjoyed the shady spot watching the hikers and swimmers from afar.

One thing in particular I love about Slovenia over the Dolomites is the amount of lakes, rivers and canyons in the area. The Slovenian Alps are lush with waterfalls, which are lacking in the Dolomites. There is no shortage of beautiful lakes and even roadside pull offs with cascading rapids to lounge by.

A midday break and sunset vows over a high alpine road

Since the day was getting hot, we decided to take a break and wait for the heat to pass. Back at the Airbnb, D lounged in the sun while A freshened up. Once the sun was lower, we drove just a few minutes away up a mountain pass for their sunset ceremony.

The clouds were high, thick and puffy, and the sun was low. There was no wind, and only a few other cars as we arrived at the top of the pass.

After a 10 minute walk (yes, only 10 minutes!!) we had a 360 degree view of the surrounding summits, stretching far into the distance. The wildflowers were lush and the grass was tall and green. It was a truly breathtaking scene.
