A winter elopement at Burg Eltz is the best choice of season for this extremely touristy location! R&C reached out about 3 months before their trip to Germany to plan their Burg Eltz elopement. Due to the quiet time of year, it was more than enough time to plan things.
They eloped outside of Burg Eltz on a cloudy day in late January 2026, with the perfect winter conditions. Had they waited just a day later, the whole area would have been covered in snow, making the hike up to the viewpoint a little more trecherous.
Winter is the best season for a Burg Eltz elopement because it avoids the inevitable crowds. Even on a cold day in January, we weren’t the first ones at the castle bridge for photos. A group of Spanish tourists got there before us, but we waited a few minutes and had the place to ourselves for a little while. This won’t happen in summer when the castle is open!
Generally, I recommend October – April for the fewest crowds. The castle closes for tours sometime around November and doesn’t open again until late March. If you elope at Burg Eltz when it’s closed for winter, you will encounter far fewer people and no tour buses. Always arrive here at sunrise, and avoid the months of June-September.

The foundational moments of any elopement day is the setting you get ready in. A slow morning waking up together, a sip of coffee by the fire, laying your outfits out around you — these are the things that elevate an elopement from “just photos” to an intentional day.
These two chose a gorgeous penthouse suite in downtown Koblenz to get ready in on their elopement day. It was modern, spacious, and multi level, so they could stay separated before the first look.

After we left their hotel, we drove the 40 minutes out to Burg Eltz. When we arrived, there were only two other cars in the parking area. It was quiet. Other than a few folks walking their dogs, and a group of Spanish tourists, we were the only ones there. We had lots of fun posing in front of the gate and on the bridge for about 45 minutes.
There are a lot of wonderful angles of the castle, so it’s good to hire someone who has been there before and knows how to pace things out.

We stayed moving to keep the January chill away. Luckily, we had a short hike ahead of us through the woods, that would get our blood flowing. I know exactly the trail to take (it’s unmarked) to arrive at the viewpoint above the castle. Again, we were the only ones there.
I let them enjoy the view while I set up a tripod to record their vows, and prepared them for their ceremony. All in all, their vows lasted about 20 minutes. No one interrupted us the entire time, and we saw no other people until we were packing up to walk back down to the castle.

During their planning, I found an incredible historic wine mill situated just off the Moselle river. This region of Germany is long known for it’s wine production, and the family owned mill has been there for hundreds of years. I arranged a private corner of the restaurant for them, where we ate some of the best food the region has to offer.
They allowed us to explore their beautiful grounds on our own, where we discovered lots of beautiful Fachwerk structures, gnarled vines and fairy lights. It was such a romantic end to the day, in a warm and quiet nook of an historic restaurant.

December brings moody days, and Christmas markets around the area. January – February are quiet and wet months. You may see snow. March is warmer, with longer daylight hours. Ultimately, it’s up to you!
As early in the morning as possible. In summer, the first tour buses from Frankfurt will arrive around 08:00 – 09:00.
The family closes the castle to tours from roughly November to March. If you want to take a tour inside the walls, you’ll want to visit during the opening months.
Yes, the castle parking area, grounds and trails are open and accessible all year round. If you don’t plan on entering the castle, and are okay with the photos shown in this couple’s gallery, you can elope at Burg Eltz year round.
Koblenz and Andernach are the nearest cities to Burg Eltz, and are wonderful locations to base yourselves. This couple stayed at the PURS luxury villa in Andernach. It was absolutely stunning and perfect for getting ready and a first look.
Look for a bilingual photographer (German/English) familiar with the area. Someone who specializes in elopements and planning elopements will also be extremely helpful. Locally, elopements are a new concept, so not all photographers will understand your unique needs.
