To elope in Iceland means to prioritize adventure, spontaneity and the profound powers of nature into your marriage celebration. But don’t forget: the land of ice and fire has a will of its own. Iceland is a prime elopement location for those who prefer unscripted moments over perfection, and who come ready to embrace the chaos of nature. Imagine standing on the edges of an ancient mossy canyon, the wind whipping at your dress, holding your partner close for warmth. Or the way the glaciers shear away boulder sized ice crystals, which sparkle like diamonds against the black beaches at sunset.
My Iceland elopement guide is for those in the early stages of planning. If you don’t know where to begin, begin here. I’ll share with you all my tips, learned over years of planning rugged outdoor elopements across the world, from Japan and Patagonia, to the Dolomites and the Faroe Islands.
Generally, you should start planning your Iceland elopement about 9 months out. This time frame makes it much less stressful to plan, as you have plenty of time to make decisions and think things over. That said, an Iceland elopement is easy to pull off in as little as 1-3 months! With the right photographer, you’ll get all the guidance you need for making informed decisions fast.
6 Steps for Planning an Iceland Elopement
Match your vision and priorities to the time of year. If you have strong preferences around weather, crowds or certain locations, make sure to pick the right month.
An experienced photographer who specializes in adventure elopements in rugged outdoor locations like Iceland will be able to help with all the next steps. You get what you pay for!
The earlier you can book, the better deals you’ll find on car rentals, hotels and certain tours. Glass lodges and luxury chalets book quickly, so grab one as soon as possible for your getting ready space!
Lean into your photographer’s advice here. They should be able to guide you on reasonable timelines, what to pack, how to prep and which vendors are trustworthy. Stay flexible in your timeline, with at least 2 backup dates.
You can have a legal elopement ceremony in Iceland, but it requires paperwork. Research the paperwork and start early to avoid stress. Opting for a symbolic vow ceremony is often easier.
4 weeks out, check in with your photographer and other vendors to confirm the plan. Ask about bad weather options, and brainstorm some fun activities in case the weather forces you inside early.

The honest truth is, there is no best month to elope in Iceland. The best month in Iceland varies on your preferences, tolerance for weather risks, crowds and surge prices. There are pros and cons to each season, so keep these in mind when choosing a date:
March and April in Iceland are transitional months, where things can change quickly from week to week. It’s the end of winter, with snow storms and high winds common place. Come prepared for the weather!
Pros: snowy and moody vibe without long winter darkness, fewer tourists, best month for northern lights sightings, 20-50% off lodging and rentals vs. peak season prices
Cons: unpredictable and sometimes dangerous weather, muddy conditions, strong seas, no access to the highlands
May and June are ideal months for an Iceland elopement. It’s a sweet spot for weather, reasonable crowds and prices.
Pros: 20+ hours of daylight, long and late sunsets, manageable temperatures, blooming lupins from mid June
Cons: winds can still be intense, much of the highlands remain closed
July and August are the best months for an Iceland elopement if your main concern is weather. These months have the warmest temperatures and the most stable winds.
Pros: lupins peak in July, most stable weather, warmest temperatures and access to highlands
Cons: crowds and peak prices

September and early October is a last chance period in Iceland before the depths of winter bury the island in snow and ice. It can be a great month for those wanting golden colors in the grasses and a return to moodier conditions.
Pros: chance at seeing northern lights, golden tones and moody skies, waning tourist crowds
Cons: rapid weather changes, highlands begin to close, shortening days with less flexibility
My honest take is not to elope in Iceland during the winter months. There is limited access to most locations, even on the south coast. Daylight hours are extremely limited, temperatures plunge, and you may spend your trip in white out conditions. That said, if you’re true winter explorers and hardened adventurers, it *could* be for you.
Pros: northern lights during long nights, ice caves and glaciers, snowy wonderland, ice climbing, dog sledding, winter wonderland in Reykjavik and Blue Lagoon
Cons: cold, dark, windy, extreme

Iceland’s south coast is the most accessible, diverse and popular region. It is perfect for all types of elopements, from short waterfall vow ceremonies, to scenic drives and glacial lagoon tours.
💡 PRO TIP: Book the Seljalandsfoss Horizons Chalets, and pencil in Skogafoss, Reynisfjara and Sólheimajökull Glacial Lagoon as your full day location options. This is a classic Iceland elopement itinerary!
The Highlands are stunning and remote, but they require the right planning, timing, and access. Weather can shut down plans fast, and booking a local guide is recommended for safety.
For privacy and solitude during your vows, go off the beaten path. Try locations which are lesser known, or at sunrise/sunset hours when crowds wane. Unique private tours gain you access to otherwise restricted areas.

Generally, a full day timeline is going to give you the most flexibility around weather. A multi-day itinerary optimizes the chances you’ll be able to do and see everything you want, even with a spell of bad weather. A half day is pretty risky, as you won’t have much room to makeup for bad luck with the weather.
For an August elopement in Iceland, the days are long and flexible. Adjust your activities and start/end times around the weather.
| Time | Activity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 5:00 AM – 5:45 AM | 🌄 Sunrise | Orient your day around sunrise or sunset, or best weather window. |
| 7:00 AM – 8:30 AM | 💄 Getting Ready in a Glass Chalet with first Look Outside | Hair & makeup, slow morning vibes with natural light through floor‑to‑ceiling windows. Intimate reveal outside the picturesque chalet, regardless of weather. |
| 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM | 🐚 Beach Photos + Picnic / Nearby Waterfall Pit Stop | Head to a black sand beach for romantic shots, then a quick picnic & waterfall stop nearby. |
| 10:30 AM – 2:30 PM | 💍 Super Jeep Tour to Ice Cave for Vow Ceremony | Travel protected through dramatic landscapes. Exchange vows inside or near the ice cave with unique light and dramatic backdrop. |
| 2:30 PM – 6:30 PM | ✨ Post‑Ceremony Adventure & Photos | Capture golden hour and blue hour as you head back; shoot at scenic overlooks. |
| 09:30PM – 10:00PM | 🌄 Sunset | If the morning weather is poor, push your timeline back for a sunset window. |

Iceland is a trendy, remote, isolated island with harsh weather and high operating costs. It’s small population values human rights and high quality of life. Almost all goods are imported, shipping costs are high and local production of essential foods and items is limited. This all means everything from food, to lodging and services, come at a premium.
✅ How to avoid it → be realistic in your budget by researching costs ahead of time, and book outside of July and August if you can.

Choose your Iceland photographer very carefully. Iceland elopement photographers must specialize in elopement planning and basic meteorology as well as having a beautiful portfolio. Iceland elopements require experience with harsh conditions, agility against constantly changing lighting and the grace to keep YOU warm, happy and excited throughout. They should carefully craft your experience as well as your photos. You are not props and your elopement day is not content. You get what you pay for out here.
✅ How to fix it → hire someone who specializes in outdoor, mountain or adventure elopements with many 5 star reviews. Experience and comfort focused vs. instagram content chasers.

It’s not just a place to sleep. Your lodging could end up being your refuge for photos if poor weather hits. Make sure you book a place which allows you flexibility. Many luxury lodges have glass walls, hot tubs, and other spaces which act as a backup location while you wait out the conditions. This becomes the stage for your getting ready photos, coffee cuddles or a steamy hot tub wind-down after a long, windy day in the elements.
✅ How to fix it → book a chalet or glass lodge in a prime location which makes a reliable space for photos

You plan for months. You daydream for hours. Your expectations are through the roof. The day comes and…the weather. A snow storm hits. The winds close roads. It’s raining sideways. The fog is unpenatrable. It’s not just unpleasant, it’s dangerous. What now?
✅ How to fix this → always stay flexible by having 2-3 days in the same area around your elopement, prioritize vendors who are flexible and have backup days worked into their packages.

It’s really tempting to want to see Reynisfjara beach, Diamond beach and Stokksness all in the same day. But did you know there is about a 90-120 minute drive between them? Don’t spend you whole day in the car!
✅ How to fix it → Prioritize your “must” location, and then choose 1-2 nearby backups for variety. Really lean into the expertise of your photographer, who should be very familiar with building reasonable timelines.

Most couples will land somewhere in the middle, with many of the “pinterest” elopements you see being on the luxury end. Would you like a personalized estimate based on your vision? Reach out here.

Yes! It requires extra paperwork and a local celebrant is recommended. Iceland is also extremely LGBTQ+ friendly, making it a great place to put your tourism dollars.
Late May and early September are fantastic months which combine the most ideal weather conditions, location accessibility and the fewest crowds. July and August are your best months for overall best conditions and the least weather related stress.
Yes. How much work that is for you comes down to the size of your vision. If you have more than 15-20 guests and want a venue space, decorations and coordination, a planner is recommended. If you’re eloping in Iceland just the two of you, or up to 5 guests, a photographer who focuses on logistics and planning is likely enough.
DIY Iceland elopements with a photographer can be under $10k. On average though, most couples spend somewhere around $15k, with luxury, multi-day adventure elopements being upwards of $25k.
Yes, August is a great month for an Iceland elopement. Right now I’m booking for August 13th-19th on the South Coast. Inquire for 10-20% off my packages during those dates.
It depends what you mean by “all inclusive.” If you’d like a planner or photographer to consolidate and guide planning and vendor coordination, then yes. If you want a truly all inclusive package where you pay one price to one vendor and everything gets taken care of, then not so much.
Book outside of July and August, and DIY things like hair/makeup and florals. Instead of a celebrant lead or viking ceremony, conduct self led symbolic vows at a free outdoor location. Invest in a good photographer who can help you choose locations, find accommodation and structure your ceremony.
Watch the aurora weather forecast, and plan your elopement in March or September. Those months have the best overlap of clear skies, adequate darkness, and solar activity. Book a chalet far from any light pollution, with a glass ceiling to watch from bed.
Go to Vestmannaeyjabær, or the Westman Islands. There is a puffin sanctuary there with the world’s largest puffin colony. They nest from late May into early August.
Early to mid July is the best time to see lupin blooms in Iceland. You can catch the beginning of the blooms in mid June, and the end into early August.

Hi! I’m Mariah, Faroe Islands and Iceland elopement photographer, based in the EU. I plan and document elopements across the windblown north Atlantic for couples who prefer adventure over production.

The rugged landscape and weather of Iceland is not for the average wedding photographer. Out here, the ability to take pretty pictures is just not enough. Getting it right on the Faroe Islands requires airtight planning, extensive prep and years of outdoor experience.
I’m an elopement photographer who specializes in adventure elopements in rugged climates. I know the right locations, local rules and how to handle the unpredictable weather here.
Photos like these don’t happen by accident, so let’s start your Iceland Elopement planning together!

“There were times throughout our elopement planning that I thought, “Mariah is like four people wrapped into one” because she works so hard and is so efficient. She will probably have researched your location better than you have, and seamlessly moves from one place to the next like she is a local. Choosing Mariah to be our elopement photographer came down to one big thing: the thought of spending the entire day with her excited us. She is a blast to spend time with on the happiest day of your life. We were blown away by her ability to capture our personalities in her photographs but also make us look like complete rockstars.”
– Sarah & Drew, June 2022
“One of the most remarkable things about Mariah is her ability to blend into the background while simultaneously being in the right place at the right time to capture those candid, emotional moments. The Faroe Islands are known for their unpredictable weather, but Mariah was prepared for anything. Rain or shine, she managed to turn every location into a breathtaking backdrop for our love story. The way she played with natural light, the landscape, and our emotions was nothing short of magical. She helped us at every step of our Faroe Islands Elopement Planning — logistics, scouting the best locations, and even offering invaluable advice on the timing of our ceremony to ensure the most favorable lighting conditions. It’s clear that Mariah goes above and beyond to ensure that every couple’s elopement is a unique and unforgettable experience.”
